Abstract:

USING The Delicensing of the Certificate of Accounting Professional (CAP) in China as a Natural Experiment, We Examine How the OcCupposition of Corporate ACCO Untants Affects Firms & RSQUO; Financial Reporting Quality (FRQ). We find that after the cap & rsquo; Surms withMore accounting positions Ex-Ante Experience a Greater DeCline in FRQ and An IncreenAl Control Weaknesss. The DeCline in FRQ is More Pronrent AMong s that increased their accounting staff in 2018, in regions with feewer accounting undergraduate program, in areas with higher unableloymentRates, in Regions With Higher OCCURRENTES of Government Office Corruption, and Within State-Owned Enterprises. Of Underqualify Staff But Also the Increased Employers & RSQUO; Bargaining Power, Which Leads to Potential Collusion Between AccountingStaff and Management. We Also Show that various StakeHolders, Including Investors, Creditors, And Analysts, Recognize the Negative of the Delicensing on F RQ. Overall, Our Findings Underscore The Importation of Occupational Licensing in MainTaining High Standards in the Accounting Profession, Particularly InContexts with prevalnt corruption and wek corporate Governance.
